Canada believes in transparency, and trust and that is what expected from the people. In last few months we have come across many applicants. Losing your job while you are on a closed (employer-specific) work permit in Canada can be daunting-bit it doesn’t mean you must leave the country. Here’s what you can do:

Understanding Your Permit Status: Even if your employment has ended, as long as your closed work permit is still valid, you can legally remain in Canada—you just cannot work for another employer without getting a new permit. This is because your permit is tied to your specific job, working anywhere else would mean working without authorization.
Have you Lost Your Work Status? If your status has expired or you have fallen out of status you may be eligible to restore your status but you must apply within 90 days of losing it. NOTE: This restoration isn’t guaranteed, so it’s vital to apply promptly and accurately.
Can you Start Working Again Right Away? Yes-with a temporary public policy (initially launched during COVID 19 extended into 2025), you may be allowed to begin working for a new employer or in a new occupation before your new work permit is officially approved—provided:
You’re in Canada with valid status (including maintained status),
You’ve submitted your application for a new employer specific permit, and
You’ve applied for the policy exemption that allows you to start working early.
This offers much-needed flexibility and minimizes employment gaps.
What Are Your Next Steps?
Step | Action |
1. Confirm Your Status | Check your permit’s expiry date and whether you’re still within the 90-day restoration window. |
2. Seek New Employment | Begin job hunting-and once you have a valid offer, your new employer can apply for an LMIA (if required) and support your new permit application. |
3. Apply for Restoration or New Permit | If needed, apply to restore status; then apply for a new closed work permit (or request the early-work policy exemption if applicable) |
4. Explore Open Work Permit Options | Depending on your situation, you may qualify for an open work permit—e.g., through spousal sponsorship, bridging open work permit (BOWP), or as a vulnerable worker |
5. Act Quickly & Strategically | Time is critical. Applying early and accurately reduces risk. Documentation and timing could make all the difference. |
