Family Class Sponsorship Program

Sponsor your spouse, partner or child
 

You can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner or dependent children.

 

Spouse: A legal marriage partner. This term includes both opposite- and same-sex relationships but does not include common-law partnerships.

Common-law partner: A person who has been living with another person in a conjugal relationship for at least one year. The term refers to opposite-sex and same-sex relationships.

Sponsor your adopted child

Conjugal Partner: A person outside Canada who has had a binding relationship with a sponsor for at least one year but could not live with their partner. The term refers to both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships

Dependant Child: A child who is under the maximum age and is not married or in a common law relationship. Generally, to qualify as dependants, children must

• be under 22 years old

• not have a spouse or common-law partner

Sponsor your parents and grandparents

​

Being a sponsor means you commit to support the people you’re sponsoring (your parents and grandparents and their accompanying family members, if applicable) for a period of time, even if your situation changes. Financially supporting the people you’re sponsoring for a period of time, called the undertaking period

• The undertaking period to sponsor your parents and grandparents is 20 years. If you live in Quebec, it’s 10 years.

As a sponsor you need to be 18 years old, financial strong, Canadian citizen or permanent resident, sufficient income

 

Income required
 

​You can only apply under this program when ever it opens up, else you can try visit visa, super visa or Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds (if your parents or grand parents are eligible)

To be a sponsor you need to be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, live in Canada, 18 years of age.

Meet requirement of intercountry adoption, most intercountry adoptions will take place in the child’s home country. Each country has different laws and procedures covering adoption by foreigners.

You can apply to sponsor your child once

• the adoption process is in progress and

• the province or territory has sent you a

  • Letter of Agreement

  • Letter of No Objection OR

  • Letter of No Involvement

To be a sponsor you need to be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, live in Canada, 18 years of age, meet income guidelines.

There are 2 types of relatives that you may be able to sponsor:

​

1. Your orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild

2. You may sponsor 1 relative of any age, if you meet all of these conditions:

• you’re related to them by blood or adoption

• you (the person who wants to sponsor your relative) don't have a living relative you could sponsor instead, such as a

  • spouse

  • common-law partner

  • conjugal partner

  • son or daughter

  • parent

  • grandparent

  • orphaned sibling

  • orphaned nephew or niece

  • orphaned grandchild

• you (the sponsor) don’t have any relatives (aunt, uncle, or any of the relatives listed above), who is a

  • Canadian citizen

  • permanent resident

  • registered Indian under the Indian Act
